Abstract

Optimal time of carbaryl spray for the purpose of fruit thinning in `Tsugaru,¢¥ `Jonagold¢¥ and `Fuji¢¥ apples were determined in relation to fruit diameter. The effect of carbaryl on fruit quality and flower bud differentiation were also examined.
1. Fruit diameter showed normal distribution in three cultivars, but the variance increased as fruit grew.
2. The percentage of natural fruit drops was 42.2% in ¢¥Tsugaru¢¥ and 37% in ¢¥Jonagold¢¥ and ¢¥Fuji,¢¥ respectively.
3. The optional spray time of carbaryl seemed to be spray was most effective when fruit diameter reached `Jonagold¢¥ and 6.7§® in `Fuji.¢¥ `Tsugaru,¢¥ and 37% in `Jonagold¢¥ limited. Fruit thinning by carbaryl to 14.5§® in `Tsugaru,¢¥ 14§® in `Jonagold¢¥ and 6.7§® in ¢¥Fuji¢¥.
4. Fruit thinning enhanced fruit quality as well as flower bud differentiation through an increase of leaf number per fruit, over 40 in `Fuji¢¥.
